AACC Calls for Malawi Religious Leaders to Safeguard Peace
While opening the three-day country-level engagement on deepening the culture of peace and creation care in Malawi, the General Secretary of the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC), Rev. Dr. Fidon Mwombeki, urged Malawian religious leaders to remain vigilant in safeguarding the country’s prevailing peace. He cautioned that no nation is immune to violence and its threats, emphasizing the need for proactive and sustained efforts to preserve harmony. The engagement took place on 5 May 2026 at Ufulu Gardens in Lilongwe.
Rev. Dr. Mwombeki reflected on peace at individual, interpersonal, community, national, and international levels, highlighting that the theme of peace runs consistently throughout the Bible from beginning to end. He underscored the responsibility of faith leaders to embody and promote peace as a core aspect of their ministry.
In his welcome remarks, the Chairperson of the Malawi Council of Churches (MCC), Rev. Prof. Billy Gama, expressed confidence that the training would go a long way in strengthening the capacity of churches in Malawi to actively contribute to peacebuilding, reconciliation, and sustainable development.
AACC's Director for Peace, Ecclesial Leadership, Theology and Sustainable Development, Rev. Dr. Lesmore G. Ezekiel, stressed the critical role of religious leaders in ensuring that appropriate measures are put in place to safeguard peace at all costs. He noted that all actions undertaken by religious leaders should add value to life, promote justice and peace, and uphold human dignity.
Among its expected outcomes, the workshop will establish a seven-person Task Force on Peace and Reconciliation to coordinate efforts among participating church members, the broader Malawian religious community, and the AACC.
